I Couldn't Afford Coaching, So NotebookLM Became My Teacher
One year. One free tool. From a Class 12 student with no coaching to a founder doing research every day. This is my honest story.
The Problem: Smart Students, Empty Pockets
When I was in Class 12, almost everyone around me was joining tuition and coaching classes. Some of them paid thousands of rupees every month. I couldn't. Paying for coaching was simply not an option for me.
But my syllabus didn't care about my budget. Economics felt heavy. English needed deep reading. And I had nobody to explain the hard parts when I got stuck.
So I had two choices: struggle alone, or find another kind of teacher. I found one. It was free. It was called NotebookLM.
What NotebookLM Actually Is (In Simple Words)
NotebookLM is a free AI tool from Google. You give it your own study material — PDFs, notes, textbook chapters, even YouTube links. Then it answers your questions using only that material.
This one thing changed everything for me. It didn't throw random internet answers at me. It answered from my books. That is exactly what a good teacher does.
How I Used It Through All of Class 12
I didn't use it for just one thing. It became my whole study routine. Here is exactly how:
- Asking my doubts: I uploaded a chapter PDF and asked questions like a student asks a teacher — "explain this in simple words," "give me an easy example." It answered straight from my textbook.
- Audiobooks in free time: NotebookLM can turn your notes into an audio overview, like two people discussing your chapter. I listened while walking, eating, or resting. My free time quietly became study time — without feeling like study.
- Flashcards and quizzes: I made flashcards and quiz questions from each chapter. This let me test myself before exams instead of reading the same lines again and again.
- Video overview for hard subjects: Economics and English were my weak points(but, Fevorite subjects). The video overview feature explained them step by step. Slowly, the "hard" chapters started feeling simple.
A Real Example From My Study Days
Here is what a normal study session looked like for me:
Me: "I uploaded my Economics chapter. Explain 'elasticity of demand' like I'm a complete beginner, with one simple everyday example."
>
NotebookLM: (a clear, simple explanation from my own textbook, using an everyday example like the changing price of vegetables)
Then I would ask it to make 5 quiz questions on the same topic. I answered them. If I got one wrong, I asked why. No fear, no judgement, no extra fee. Just learning at my own speed.
One Year Later: From Student to Founder
That habit never left me. Today I am a founder. My problems are different now — market research, understanding competitors, reading long reports. But my tool is the same.
I drop research documents into NotebookLM and pull out the key points in minutes. What once helped me pass exams now helps me make business decisions.
And it keeps getting better. NotebookLM recently added an option to generate short videos from your material. For a founder like me, that means turning a boring research file into something I can actually watch and share.
The Takeaway
If you believe good learning needs a lot of money, please read this line again: it doesn't.
You only need three things — your material, your effort, and a tool that explains things patiently. For me, that tool was NotebookLM, and it cost me nothing.
- If you are a student with no budget for coaching, start here.
- If you are a professional drowning in documents, start here.
- If you simply want to learn faster, start here.
The tool is free. The only thing you have to bring is the will to learn.
